What is an Internet Browsing History?

Whenever you surf online and view web sites, any of the popular browsers on the market (e.g. Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera or Chrome) saves on your local hard disk data from each page you’ve ever visited. Moreover, your online activity is itself recorded on your local hard disk and very often on external servers.

The browsing history components:

  • Auto-complete Forms: Web browsers store a record of almost everything that was typed into the edit boxes of the most popular search engines, websites and online tools on the market (such as Google, Yahoo, Windows Live, Facebook, EBay, MySpace, YouTube, Google Toolbar, Yahoo! Toolbar, MSN Toolbar, etc).
  • Index.dat files: Specific to Windows, index.dat files continuously store information regarding your entire online activity, from the very first time you launched the Internet Explorer browser or Windows Explorer. They are always locked during a Windows session and cannot be deleted manually.
